How It Works
The refractometer operates on the principle of light refraction. When a small sample of milk or colostrum is placed on the prism surface, light passes through the fluid at different angles depending on the concentration of dissolved solids—primarily sugars, proteins, and immunoglobulins (IgG). The instrument then displays a percentage reading on the Brix scale.
Higher Brix value = higher concentration of solids and immunoglobulins
Lower Brix value = lower-quality colostrum or diluted milk
Using the Refractometer to Check Colostrum Quality
Place a few drops of well-mixed colostrum on the prism surface.
Close the daylight plate to spread the sample evenly.
Look through the eyepiece toward a light source.
Read the Brix percentage displayed on the internal scale.
Interpreting Colostrum Brix Values
>22% Brix – High-quality colostrum (excellent IgG levels)
18–22% Brix – Medium quality
<18% Brix – Low quality; may be insufficient for passive immunity transfer
